Post apocalyptic by johnsonting Post apocalyptic by johnsonting
Here's a another speed painting I did this afternoon, trying out a post apocalyptic scene and wanted to share on some different techniques and hope to inspire some other people out there.

The time lapse of the video is here [link]
It's about 2.5 hours in real time.

Also, you guys could recommend want you want to know and what you would like me to share, I'll review them and hopefully do painting recordings to reply them. Just throw me any requests you have in mind.

So, you can follow my youtube channel and stay tuned for coming vids.

I'm not really that good at paintings, unlike masters like fengzhu, daniel dociu, kekai, etc, but i'm also learning, so i'll try to help those who're like me as well out there.

It depends, since im working in this industry, i have to be quick and accurate, so i have to practice alot of paintings and studies under a very tight timeline to train myself. If i'm working as a, lets say magic card illustrator, i will spend more time on producing a single illustration rather than rushing several paintings out. Haha, so it depends on which one you're happy with, it doesnt matter alot as long as you're painting.

ahh i see. How do you get your freelance ?
from sites such as conceptart.org? they contact you or do you have to look?

i take it you mostly take Angmo clients? haha
heard from kael local ones are very... problematic x.x

haha, yeap, im not sure where they came from, i usually got mails from them. Mostly americans and french, good people to work with. I think they got my work from forums and deviantart, i get a few commissions from da as well, quite fun. Yeaa,i dont take much local freelance assignment, i'm quite afraid of the complications, got into one once and been quite cautious ever since.

a concept artist is still an artist. It is in the name xD I just find using overlaying photos is rather lazy when you could just paint them

A concept artist is still an artist, fengzhu has a video that has covered this argument, its quite a good vid. Well tbh, most of us we're required to do so on jobs. We often have to push out several environment concepts in a few hours. Our clients doesnt care how we make it, he just want it on time and to look good. That's why we're call concept artists, speed and quality is a very good advantage for us, but we never forget the fundamentals and principles of art, we all do illustrations in our free time as well, and most of the concept artists including myself came from a traditional background. This vid is mainly to show how we usually work if we have a tighter timeline. So don't get me wrong, its not about laziness, judge art by art itself, not the tools creating it. :)

I get what you mean yeah. But that last statement I would have to disagree on. I often judge on how hard it must have been to paint a certain image. And for someone to use a 3D software to try to recreate that effect is not only kind of cheating but also insulting. Designing a model compared to drawing it with perspective has no comparison. I hate when these two are often crossed paths, especially on deviantart. You see a great piece of art then you read the description only to find they used a 3d software. It is disappointing to say the least. Yes I agree with you about having to get them out as quickly as possible. And I know the clients never really care how you did it. I just wish that it mattered. Art is losing it's value with all these different medias.

I guess you have no idea on how hard it is to make a 3D model out, 3D itself is another form of art, its not 'cheating' and its definitely not insulting, you cannot diss an artwork just because it's 3D or 3D software had been used to create it. I have to tell you that if you keep this mindset going, it's going to be a very bad for your career. You're still young and I wish that you keep an open mind, art is not losing it's value, it is how art has always been from time to time, it changes according to generations. Research a little, and trust me, 3D is the one of the hardest medium to master in the world of digital art.

Geez!! 2 and a half hours? Took me 20 just to do a basic lineart :P Tho i'm still..learning.. quite a bit. I personally think your paintings are awesome but.. artists tend to be most self critical of themselves.

In regards to recommendations on well.. what I would want to know and such I would say.. shading a humanoid figure. It's defiantly a concept I'm having the most trouble grasping.

And.. following youtube channel!

I really love the ambiance you put on this drawing!!! I like the post-apocalyptic feeling and the futuristic design (yet simple enough to help the eye notice everything) and on top of that, the picture tells a story.. you don't even have to describe it.. makes me want to know more :3 bravo!
